Latest humanitarian snapshot highlights effects of Typhoon Rammasun across region

THE PHILIPPINES

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of 18 Jul, Typhoon Rammasun affected 882,300 people in Regions I, III, IV-A, IV-B, V, VIII, and NCR.

A total of 54 people were reported dead, 100 were injured and three are still missing. Around 525,800 people were displaced and seeking shelter in 1,200 evacuation centres. Approximately 7,000 houses were totally damaged and 19,250 were partially damaged. The Humanitarian Country Team is on standby to support the Government.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration is monitoring tropical storm Matmo (Henry), located 880 km east of the Philippines. Matmo is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility but is not expected to make landfall.

On 14 July, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred 106 km southeast of Davao Occidental. There was no reported damage to property or loss of life.

BANGLADESH

An increase in malaria cases was reported on 6 July by local health authorities in the Hill Tracts. Six children died while more than 1,500 other cases were reported in the district of Bandarban.

On 16 July, around 115 villages in the districts of Bhola, Patuakhali and Barguna were flooded following the collapse of flood control dykes in southern Bangladesh. Around 50.000 people have been affected by floods.

The Government of Bangladesh is leading the evacuations and providing immediate relief.

CHINA

On 18-19 July, Typhoon Rammasun hit coastal cities in Guangdon and Hainan provinces in Guangxi region, causing flash floods and strong winds and affecting more than three million people.

Rammasun is the biggest typhoon to hit southern China in 40 years. The government is leading response operations.

VIET NAM

On 19 July, Typhoon Rammasun struck Quang Ninh province in northern Viet Nam. Provincial authorities have reported no fatalities. This is largely attributed to pre-emptive evacuation of people from the projected storm path. Media sources report about 100 houses damaged.

SRI LANKA

According to the Government's Disaster Management Centre, over 5,900 people have been affected by high winds caused by the southwest monsoon in six districts. One person is reported dead and 16 people are reported injured.

A total of 106 houses were fully destroyed and 1,605 houses were partially damaged. At present, 550 people are living in nine welfare centres in Nuwara Eliya, Badulla and Rathnapura districts. The Government is leading the response.
