NGOs, Tourism and Development

The rising prominence of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in tourism to generate development has stimulated discussions over the last decades, and NGOs increasingly integrate tourism as a tool in issues relating to the strengthening of communities and their livelihoods as alternative path to enhance sustainable development. The intention in this chapter is to critically reflect on the role of NGOs operating in the intersection between tourism and development to achieve political, sociocultural or economic ends; and encourage avenues for further research to understand NGOs’ role in creating responsible futures.
