UN raises fears over civilian casualties in latest escalation of Yemen violence
I am deeply concerned at the continued reports of fighting in Taizz.
The escalation of violence over the last four days has resulted in tens of war-wounded arriving at medical facilities and multiple deaths. Most people affected by the recent clashes are innocent civilians trying to go about their daily lives, but are being swept up in the violence and indiscriminate shelling that is all to frequent in Taizz city and its surrounding. Approximately 70% of the war-wounded are women and children. They bear most of the consequences of the war and the continuing disregard for the protection of civilians.
I call on all parties to the conflict to uphold their duties under International Humanitarian Law and provide protection for civilians; to facilitate access to medical facilities for all the sick and wounded; to allow humanitarian and medical supplies into all areas; and to protect medical staff and health facilities.
As the holy month of Ramadan begins, I urge all the parties to the conflict to lay down their weapons and halt the fighting to bestow much needed peace and tranquility to the people of Yemen during this festive season.
